Redefining Men's Finest Luxury
You never know when you will meet the person who will change your life forever. Every successful man has a defining story. Mine took place in September, 2014.
I just had one of these weeks; three meetings in Las Vegas, one in Los Angeles and two in San Francisco. I made more money in that year than my entire graduating class combined. Still, I was feeling like crap. If you ever worked with someone incompetent, and you know you have, you understand the feeling.
I decided to rent a car and drive up north to Napa. When I got there, I thought I was in Walking Dead. The city had been ravaged by an earthquake a few weeks earlier, which I had totally forgotten.
This didn’t stop me from enjoying my day. I checked in at this little hotel across the river and my first stop was the hotel bar. There was no one, not even a barmaid. I saw a Woodford Reserve bourbon bottle right behind the bar. It was perfect. Jumped behind the bar and made myself an usual old-fashioned.
Before I could go back to my seat, this beautiful girl entered the bar. "I'll have whatever you're having," she says. I didn't say anything, smiled at her and she smiled back.
A few minutes later, we started talking. It seemed like I wasn't the only one having a rough week. She was a model. Well, if you had seen her, it wasn't that hard to figure out. Most models I had met before made me think that being a model was like being queen of the world. Well, that's what their Twitter was saying most of the time.
This girl wasn't like anyone else. She was articulate, educated, and seemed authentic. What I understood from our conversation was that the industry wasn't regulated at all and none of the magazines were paying models for their work. "We're giving you exposure; you should thank us," was the wide message spread across the industry.
We enjoyed a few drinks, shared a few laughs, and while I was staring at her eyes (and sometimes cleavage, don't act like you wouldn't!), I couldn't stop thinking about how simple it would be to solve both our problems.
What if someone launched a magazine and shared its success with models? Slavery in this country ended decades ago, but models were still not writing their own story. When you buy any magazine, you basically give your money to a horny guy in his basement who sells pictures he has been given for free. What if a magazine shared its revenue so models could fulfill their dreams? What if finally, someone treated models like family for real, instead of pretending they do?
And what was I really living for? Money? No. We're living for one simple thing: to feel alive. Remember your first high school crush, how incredible you felt? Remember the first party you threw, how unstoppable you felt? You had dreams. The world was your oyster.
That night Modelizer was created. I flew back to Canada, threw everything away, built a team, and since September 2015, Modelizer has become a reality.
Modelizer is not a magazine. It's a sanctuary where you can come and escape drama, life pressure and the bills. It's somewhere where you can feel more alive than you ever did, where you can feel those butterflies in your stomach again or this amazing sensation of being with a bunch of guys drinking, gaming or watching sports without someone expecting anything from you. And remember that while you are enjoying yourself here, you're a dream maker, because you’re helping models live their dreams.
